Forward, a WordPress Theme to Get Your Organization Moving

We’re excited to announce the release of our latest WordPress theme, Forward. It’s been designed with NGO’s and non-profits in mind to help them quickly and easily create a web presence that impacts their visitors. Here are some of the highlights of the theme.

Useful Functionality

Forward-Full-Email
Some WordPress themes cram everything that any user could possibly ever need into theme, without a lot of thought given to whether or not this is a good thing. That approach leaves the user with potentially hundreds of settings that must be selected before the theme can be used. To me that seems like a mistake.

With Forward we wanted it to work great immediately upon installation. There are options for colors, fonts, logos and so on in the customizer, but you don’t have to use any of them. They really are “options” as in optional.

The best themes are the ones that you install and get to the real work of creating your content. Forward makes that happen.

It’s also our first theme that doesn’t have a traditional theme options page at all. Everything is set via the customizer now, which I believe gives you a much better experience setting up your site. You can preview your changes as you make selections live before committing them to the front end of your site.

Useful Tools

Real themes for organizations come with tools to help you achieve your goals. With that in mind, we’ve included our campaign extension for WooCommerce. It allows you to run fundraising campaigns on your site and collect donations right there as well.

We’ve also built in a MailChimp widget that allows your visitors to subscribe to a newsletter right from any widget area in the theme. There is also a handy contact widget that you can use to share you contact information and a map to your location.

We pioneered staff sections in WordPress themes back with the release of our Agency theme and that functionality is here in Forward as well. You can create staff directories to introduce your visitors to the key people in your organization.

You can also use the sponsors section to express your gratitude to the organizations that support you. It has a widget, page template and optional sponsor groups that you can use to create listings of those who have given support to you.

So I hope you enjoy our Forward theme. I believe it can be a real benefit to organizations, large and small.

Hi Bill,
I’m considering purchasing Forward for the website of a non profit organisation I am working with. They also need a private users area where they can share and archive stuff, is that option available?
Many thanks

    Hi Francesca,

Thank you for your interest. Great question too. You can create a members only section in a WordPress site. To do that you’ll want to use a plugin like Restrict Content. It allows you to set some of your pages and posts so that they can only be viewed by members who are logged in.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

    Thanks,
    Bill

The link for instructions on setting up the campaign extension is broken. Can you provide the correct link?

Hi Bill –

Could you post or send over some images of the dashboard and I’m wondering if you have a listing of the shortcodes built into the theme?

Thanks,
Peter

    Hey Peter,

Excellent questions. I’m of the belief that shortcodes generally shouldn’t be in themes. No matter how great the theme is, eventually you’ll switch to a new one and when that happens, any theme specific shortcodes will be left in your content. There’s nothing like seeing [social-button-facebook] randomly on a page to confuse a visitor. There are quite a few plugins that do a great job of adding in items like buttons, columns, alerts and so on via shortcode. Plus you can keep using them when you switch themes.

I’ll email you screenshots form the customizer. I made Forward so that the options are really optional. You’re welcome to use any of them to make changes to the site, but your not left with having to set dozens or more options just to get started. Most of the options are for changing colors or fonts.

    Thanks,
    Bill

Bill,

Could you expand on the difference between this theme (Forward) and Foundation theme? I am going back and forth in my mind trying to decide between them and figure out the specific detailed differences.

    Hello Jamie,

Great question. They are similar in design. Forward’s advantage is it’s integration with WooCommerce for fundraising. It allows you to collect donations in more ways than Foundation does. It will also keep track of your progress automatically. Foundation is manually updated.

They are both good and will work for your goals. We always have a buy one, get one free so you can have both for the same price. If I was starting out, I would go with Forward.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

    Thanks,
    Bill
