After the theme is installed and activated, here are some instructions on how to use the theme for your site.
Theme Options Page
You’ll notice after activating the theme, there is now a “Theme Options” link available in the Appearance menu of your WordPress control panel. Click there to get started. The first section is for your logo and favicon (the small icon that goes by your URL in the browser’s navigation bar). To add these go to the media menu and select add new. Use the uploader there to browse your computer and add your files. Once you finish uploading your logo, copy the URL that you are given and paste it into the box for your logo in the theme options page. Do the same with your favicon if you’d like to. Save your changes and that will take care of your logo.
Below the identity section, you’ll find a spot where you can add your Google Analytics tracking code, or the code of any other statistic tracking software you’d like to use. Just select “yes” and paste the complete code into the box and that will add analytics to your site.
The right hand column controls any custom styling you’d like to include. The top box is for a custom background. If you want to use an image, upload it with the method described above for logos and paste the URL into the box. You can choose how it repeats as well scrolling.
Below that you can choose to customize link colors and add any custom css if you so choose.
Front Page Slide Show
To add images to the home page slide show, click on the slideshow link in the appearance section of the control panel. You will need to upload images that area 998 pixels wide by 620 high or larger. Once your image are uploaded you can add links and captions to them by filling in the appropriate boxes beside the thumbnail of your images. Once your finished click save to update your changes.
Picture Page Template
To have a picture style page like the demo, create a new page and from the page template box on the right hand side choose “picture style page.” To add your image, click the upload/insert image icon just above the main content box. Select the image you’d like to use and upload it. Once the upload finishes, scroll down in the pop-up and choose “use as featured image” and then publish/update your page. That will add the image to the background as in the demo.
Home Page And Sidebars
The home page in the Alpha theme has a sidebar where you can add widgets. Go to the appearance menu and select widgets to access that area. The demo uses a text widget to provide a welcome to the site, but you can use any that you’d like to. There are also sidebar areas on all posts, as well as non-picture page template pages. You can drag any available widgets to these areas to provide content.
Navigation
Alpha makes use of the navigation builder that was introduced in WordPress 3.0. Go to the appearance area and select menu to get started. I’ve created a screen cast that explains how the menus work and you can see it below.
As always, if you need any help, please feel free to ask.
